Glance at Current Foster Care in Lancaster County
The local county agency, Lancaster County Children & Youth Agency, receives all
children who come into care. They have 189 approved resource homes which includes
traditional and kinship. They are always looking for more people to open their homes,
particularly to school aged children and teenagers. There are a large number of teens
that are aging out of the foster care system, without having a “forever family”. In fact,
since there aren’t enough homes, the county contracts with several faith-based
organizations that provide foster care and sometimes children are even placed outside
the county due to lack of foster homes within. In 2014, the number of children entering
foster care hit a five-year high. There were 287 children who entered foster care, up
from 188 in 2013. There were 706 children who spent at least part of the year in foster
care. Children may be placed into foster care due to no fault of their own. Drug and
alcohol use, poverty, lack of affordable housing, physical abuse and lack of family
support are all factors that lead to children being placed in foster care. These children
deserve a loving, safe home.
